What is a vaccine mandate? Let’s talk about what isn’t a vaccine mandate first. If a vaccine was added to the CDC schedule, it doesn’t mean it’s automatically mandated. According to the National Vaccine Information Center (NVIC), there is a difference between federal vaccine policies and state vaccine laws. There isn’t a wide-sweeping vaccine mandate at the federal level for all Americans. If you are subject to a vaccine mandate, it most likely will be at the state level. Mandates (or requirements) typically are only for educational or employment purposes. Don’t worry, there are ways to exempt yourself from a mandate.
What vaccines are mandated? It depends on your state law. Most states have specific vaccines written in state law that are included in mandates. And some states have submitted their authority to the CDC meaning any vaccine added to the CDC schedule is automatically required in that State. If you are a federal employee/military, most likely mandates are based on the CDC schedule.
How do I find out which vaccines are mandated in my state? Thankfully, NVIC created an easy to search map for state vaccine requirements + exemptions. Click here and scroll to the map (example below) then click on your state. It’ll take you to a page with all the information you need concerning your specific state.
What are vaccine exemptions? There are three types of exemptions:
Medical
Religious
Personal/Philosophical/Conscientious
Some states allow exemptions based on proof of immunity.
How can we protect vaccine exemptions? Again, NVIC is an excellent resource. Click here to learn the legislative efforts in your state that are either helping/hindering your right to decline vaccinations.

We’re almost done with the vaccine-specific lessons, however first we need to touch on Vaccine Information Sheets (VIS).
